Large-deflection analysis of cord composite plates
Abstract
dc:descriptionCord composites, which are constructed by embedding cords in a rubber matrix, have been used in industry for many years. This type of composite is strong in extension in the cord direction but very flexible with regard to bending. Previous studies in predicting the elastic constants of wire cord composites treated the cords as solid cylindrical wires and neglected the mechanical properties of wire strand. Wire strand usually consists of a center wire surrounded by six helical outer wires. It extends and twists when it is loaded by an axial load and twists and extends when it is subjected to a twisting moment. It is also more flexible than the solid cylindrical cord with the same cross sectional area. This coupling and flexibility should be apparent in the response of a cord composite.
