Cell cycle parameters and sweet corn emergence and seedling vigor
Abstract
dc:descriptionSweet corn genotypes containing the shrunken2 (sh2) endosperm mutation are associated with reduced emergence and poor seedling vigor. Shrunken2 genotypes with known differences for field emergence and vigor were used to investigate the contribution of seedling cell division to emergence and seedling growth. Variation among genotypes was observed for all of the cell division cycle phases which include G1, S, and G2. The S phase, when cells are undergoing DNA replication, showed the closest association to seedling growth. Inbred lines homozygous for starchy (Su1) endosperm displayed a significantly higher proportion of nuclei in the S phase than the same inbred homozygous for the sh2 endosperm mutation. Among all the genotypes tested, the proportion of nuclei in the S phase was positively correlated with field emergence and seedling vigor.
