Organizational aspects of Mississippian settlement systems in western Kentucky

Recent fieldwork by the Western Kentucky Project of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, when considered in light of previously recovered information, has yielded a substantial body of data on the Mississippian cultures of the region surrounding the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Examined here are data on material culture, site size, public architecture, and structures aimed at the identification of patterns, trends and processes in Mississippian settlement organization. The Mississippian settlement system developed from a local Late Woodland basis, in which site organization was highly redundant, into a system in which sites were increasingly differentiated. The chronological and organizational trends of this process have implications for the way in which chiefdoms are viewed. These implications are incorporated into a dynamic model of Mississippian settlement and social organization in the Confluence Region.
