Signals of supersymmetry in top quark decays at positron-electron and hadron-hadron colliders

Abstract

dc:description

As the search for 'new physics' intensified in the past decade, phenomenological consequences of non-standard theories, such as supersymmetry, became highly important to the future of high energy physics. We examined the possibility of detecting supersymmetry in existing and future $e\sp+ e\sp-$ and hadron-hadron colliders. We have focussed on the influence of supersymmetry on the search for the top quark (as yet, undiscovered) by studying the two specific processes: $e\sp+ e\sp-$ $\to$ $\Theta$ $\to$ $g\tilde{g}\tilde{k}$, where $\tilde{k}$ is either a $\tilde{g}$ or \tilde{γ}, and $pp \to$ $t\bar{t}X$ followed by $t$ $\to$ b+l\sp{+}+\nu\sb{\rm l}+\tildeγ+\tildeγ. The Webber Marchesini Monte Carlo programs, EARWIG and HERWIG, were used to generate 1000 events of each type at center of mass energies of 2$m\sb{\rm t}$ for the $e\sp+ e\sp-$ machines, and 40 TeV, for the SSC, respectively. We find that although it is possible to observe supersymmetry, we need machines of higher luminosity to detect it. We also find that there is a major background in the hadron-hadron colliders (both the Tevatron and the SSC) from the initial state bremsstrahlung radiation which, at top quark mass of 100 GeV, can obscure the true nature of the jets from the hard subprocess itself.
