A model of college adjustment for students with physical disabilities

A model was specified and tested to examine relationships between variables that affect students with disabilities and their adjustment to college. The emphasis of the model is on prediction of college adjustment and commitment to continue at the same university. The variables examined were chosen based on their importance in the college adjustment and rehabilitation literature. Results supported the feasibility of the model. Perceived support was predictive of an absence of psychological distress, which in turn predicted academic and goal commitment. Social interaction was also found to influence academic and goal commitment. Implications of the results were related to the academic and personal needs of students with disabilities.
