Inter-Rydberg excitation spectroscopy of krypton dimers

An excitation spectrum of the krypton dimer 6p$\sp3\Pi\sb{\rm g}(0\sbsp{g}{-})$ $\gets$ 5s$\sp3\Sigma\sbsp{\rm u}{+}(1\sb{\rm u}$, 0$\sbsp{\rm u}{-})$ transition has been observed over 525 nm $\leq$ $\lambda$ $\leq$ 545 nm. An argon fluoride excimer laser was used to excite the atomic krypton 6p (3/2) $\sb2$ state, which produced metastable dimers via collisions with the 300 Torr krypton background. Molecular transitions originating from the metastable 5s$\sp3\Sigma\sbsp{\rm u}{+}(1\sb{\rm u}, 0\sbsp{\rm u}{-}$) were then probed with a dye laser, and the predissociation of the upper states of these transitions produced atomic fluorescence. Suppressions in the fluorescence, which were correlated with atomic transitions, demonstrate that the atomic 5p (3/2) $\sb1$ state is the primary product of the molecular 6p$\sp3\Pi\sb{\rm g}(0\sbsp{\rm g}{-}$) predissociation, and that the probable channel for this process is the 5p0$\sbsp{\rm g}{-}$ state whose atomic limit is the 5p (3/2) $\sb1$ state. In addition it is observed that Hund's case (c) is consistent with these observations.
