Abstract
dc:descriptionThis study of 19th century American theatre examines in depth the managerial careers of four women: Mrs. D. P Bowers and Mrs. John Drew in Philadelphia, Mrs. John Wood in New York and Mrs. F. B. Conway in Brooklyn. In each chapter, one woman is profiled and the actors, plays and policies of her theatre detailed. There is also an introductory chapter outlining general stock company traditions as well as several notable actress-managers who preceded those profiled.
