Women in the workforce: Overcoming time and space constraints

More women are in the workforce today than in the history of America. This has upset our previous notions of women's roles in American society as well as our definition of family. Dual career couples, single parent families and singles living alone have replaced the traditional male wage earner, female homemaker and children which we once looked upon as the ideal family unit. Although women today are encouraged to pursue careers, or forced to work due to financial obligations, most women are still responsible for the care of the home and children. This puts tremendous constraints on the activities of women as they must perform at least two full-time jobs: that of wage earner and homemaker. Further constraints are created as women must negotiate the built environment which separates work places and residential areas.
