Constraint models for an object-oriented database
Abstract
dc:descriptionThere has been much work in the area of object-oriented databases for engineering design applications. The ability to define and have enforced arbitrary semantic constraints to represent design rules and design intent factors is a useful attribute of such an engineering design database. There are a number of proposed object-oriented database systems incorporating constraints, but there is a need to fully analyze the approaches to modeling constraints in an object-oriented database. There are two such models which we have analyzed, embedded constraints, which use the object type/class system to define constraints, and constraint objects, which use object instances representing constraints that are linked to instances of data objects in the database. Along with those constraint models, we have researched three approaches to checking and enforcing those constraints: incrementally with each database update, delayed until the end of a transaction, and independently of any user updates.
