"Expanding the ""Pacific Union""? The impact of the process of democratization on international security"

The primary purpose of this work is to explore the impact of the process of democratization, which is currently under way in more than thirty countries around the globe, on the propensity of states to cooperate or engage in conflicts in the international arena. In brief, it is argued that whether democratization exerts a pacifying influence or whether it impedes cooperation and promotes conflict ultimately depends on the success of the transitional process itself. The empirical analysis is based on comparison of post-communist Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, and Hungary, as well as on a large-N statistical study.
