Reflections on political authority and rootlessness in works of Hawthorne and Melville
Abstract
dc:descriptionLike Plato, Hawthorne and Melville engage us in the perennial conversation about how we should live. The literary form of their political reflections recalls the incarnation of political theory in Plato's dialogues. The stories of Hawthorne and Melville enlarge our understandings about political authority and rootlessness, two features of every political community, within the American context.
