On the collective model of glasses at low temperature
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe universal behavior of insulating glasses at low temperature, compatible with but not explained by the tunnelling two level (TLS) model is reviewed. Recent non-equilibrium dielectric experiments on the capacitance of glasses are analyzed within the framework of the TLS theory. The prediction of this model are shown to be incompatible with the experimental data. The importance of elastic interactions as a possible solution to these problems is emphasised and several simple models are introduced. The question of the importance of interactions at long lengthscale is discussed using a renormalization group approach.
