Superconductivity of a Precipitation Hardening Alloy of Aluminum

The critical magnetic field as a function of temperature has been measured for a precipitation hardening aluminum alloy in various conditions of heat treatment. The alloy studied contains approximately 1.1% Mg2Si and the hardening process involves the precipitation of Mg2Si from a supersaturated solid solution. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the lattice distortions produced by the precipitating particles on the superconducting behavior of the aluminum.
