Thermal conductivity anisotropy in molybdenum disulfide thin films

This study was completed to determine the anisotropy in molybdenum disulfide, MoS2, thin films. The hexagonal crystal structure of MoS2 and recent results on tungsten diselenide, with a similar structure, lead to the belief that MoS2 may exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivities were measured using the time-domain thermoreflectance method. MoS2 samples were prepared with different crystallographic orientations relative to the substrate by magnetron sputtering and ion-beam-assisted deposition. The thermal conductivity of MoS2 was measured as low as 0.2 W/m-K, very low for a fully dense solid and 3 times lower than in the amorphous phase. Although thermal conductivity was not strongly dependent on the orientation of the crystal structure, deposition parameters can be used to control thermal conductivity.
