Web Server Quality-Of-Service: Testbed Architecture

Significant research has been done lately investigating methods for providing Quality of Service guarantees for Web Servers [1][2]. Many experiments supporting this research are performed on small isolated networks or subnets. This paper outlines the design and implementation of a graphical user interface designed to oversee and manage such experiments. The main challenge in managing these experiments is coordinating the execution of programs on different machines. This thesis addresses that issue by proposing an interface that can be run on a single machine to coordinate the execution of software on all machines in the testbed. Chapter 2 describes the web server Quality-of-Service (QoS) model which provides the initial motivation for creation of the interface. Chapter 3 describes the physical layout of the isolated network and describes the software packages whose execution must be coordinated to run an experiment. Chapter 4 proposes a software architecture and messaging protocol for a user interface which can be used to perform this coordination. Chapters 5 and 6 describe the implementation of the proposed user interface. Chapter 7 compares the results of an experiment performed without the user interface and an experiment performed with the user interface. Chapter 8 provides conclusions and directions for future work
