An electronic beam-steering antenna using a tunable FSS
Abstract
dc:descriptionTwo novel FSS (frequency selective surface) systems working from 1.6 to 1.8 GHz are proposed for cellular beam-steering applications. An FSS system is comprised of metallic screens which are sandwiched by dielectric slabs. In order for the system to function as a band-pass filter, the geometry of the unit cell on the metallic screens is designed to be a slotted patch. The FSS system is capable of providing reconfigurable phase shifts for transmitted waves with the use of electronic devices in the unit cells. Therefore, it can achieve beam-steering ability if the phase differences of the transmitted waves coming out of the adjacent columns on the FSS are properly configured. A horn antenna is used as the feed to form a filtenna with the FSS system to provide high gain. Another FSS system made of dipole-patch array is also proposed. This FSS system consists of a basic set of four dipole patches and a tail patch. By adjusting the tail dimension, the FSS system allows for beam-steering ability. Compared with the slotted-patch FSS, the dipole-patch FSS has the advantages of low power consumption and low cost. The experimental and simulated results of both FSS systems are be presented.
