Out of the dirt: Fabrication of cicada-inspired nanostructured engineered surfaces and the assessment of their antibacterial properties
Abstract
dc:descriptionMicrobial contamination is a prevalent issue in medical implants, filtration systems, shipping industry, and veterinary science. Endeavors in microbe deterrence are usually limited to addition of a surface coating, which is at risk of losing its efficacy completely due to erosion. Moreover, recent years have seen a rise in microbial resistance due to the increased use of antibiotics. It is therefore imperative to develop durable surfaces that are mechanically bactericidal. In this study, naturally antibacterial cicada wing was used as an inspiration to fabricate the next generation antimicrobial engineering surfaces. The fabricated surfaces were then tested to determine their antibacterial efficiency.
