Ambattar: Unfreedom, mobility, and women’s reproductive labor in the North Atlantic world, 750-1050

This dissertation charts the mobility of mostly nameless young women and girls trafficked into the Norse settlements in Iceland from Eastern Europe, North America, and Central Asia. It contends that the forced migration and reproductive labor of these women constitutes an essential aspect of the medieval world’s increasing globalization – although their descendants would ultimately obscure their individual and collective roles when writing the nation- and state-building narratives of later centuries.
