Investigation of a reconfigurable GPS antenna for direction finding and nulling applications

Abstract

dc:description

In wireless communication systems, the presence of spoofers and jammers present a concern in various applications, such as with Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. This creates a need for the system to have the ability to differentiate spoofed signals from true ones and preferably mitigate them. In this thesis, an antenna capable of performing these functions is presented in the form of a hemispherical spiral, or "hemispiral," antenna. The antenna operates via differential feeding, producing a steerable null in its radiation pattern, which results in distinct patterns to allow for direction of arrival estimation. This thesis presents this already fabricated antenna, then proposes modifications to the structure with the goal of increasing the angular extent of its direction finding region. Preliminary simulation data is presented, followed by experimental data taken to validate simulations. An additional investigation is performed in response to the results obtained in preliminary measurements, and a discussion of this investigation concludes the thesis.
