Quality assessment of 3D printed concrete through point cloud data analysis

dc:descriptionLarge-scale 3D printing has garnered increasing attention in the construction sector in recent years. Quality control and assurance in 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) are vital aspects in ensuring the quality of the final 3D-printed products. Even though there's growing interest in 3DCP and its possible uses, there aren't enough studies focusing on how to ensure good quality. This lack of research on quality control makes it difficult to adopt 3DCP technologies and affects its long-term success in the construction industry. Moreover, the consistency of layer dimensions during the 3D printing process has not been thoroughly investigated in previous studies. To address these gaps, this thesis aims to: (1) develop a methodology for assessing the quality of the overall shape of printed structures by evaluating the similarity between the point cloud of 3DCP and its intended shape, utilizing distance error, normal angle difference, and curvature error as metrics; (2) establish a technique for identifying surface defects in 3DCP and incorporating them into the 3D model by back-projecting the 2D pixels to 3D for intuitive visualization and analysis; and (3) explore the potential for evaluating the uniformity and structural integrity of 3DCP by computing the consistency of layer dimensions in 3DCP. This work aims to contribute to the advancement of quality assessment methods in 3DCP and facilitate its broader adoption in the construction industry.
