Insights into motivating factors for clinical trial participation across racial and ethnic identities: A hints data study
Abstract
dc:descriptionObjective: The purpose of this secondary analysis is to understand the factors motivating participation in a clinical trial. Methods: We used the nationally representative Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 5 Cycle 4). We analyzed a sub-sample of 347 respondents with complete observations who had been invited to participate in clinical trial. We evaluated motivating factors (family encouragement, doctor encouragement, altruism, standard care not being covered by insurance, and financial incentives). Results: Financial incentives were a significant motivating factor for Hispanic or Latino participants, while standard care not being covered by insurance was a motivating factor for non-Hispanic White participants. Non-Hispanic White participants were also motivated by altruism or wanting to benefit others. Family and doctor encouragement did not show statistical significance in any racial or ethnic group, but there was a trend of lower participation among Latinx respondents who were motivated by family or doctor encouragement. Motivating factors were not found to be influential on participation among Non-Hispanic Black or Asian/Other respondents. Discussion: We initially hypothesized that we would be able to identify the motivating factors driving decision making practices along racial and ethnic identity. What we found was that motivating factors are different among respondents among these identifying characteristics, demonstrating a need to adjust recruiting practices to be more culturally relevant and sensitive to the needs of a diverse group of respondents.
