LabVIEW integration, the effects of plasma on carbon nanotubes, and monolayer molybdenum disulfide synthesis

Abstract

dc:description

As transistors reach a new era in development driven by challenges and limitations of conventional fabrication, 2D materials pique the interest of many in the field as the solution towards a new generation of transistors. This thesis investigates ways to optimize current methods of 2D material fabrication for device integration. First, a more reliable way to scan the graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) studied in the group is discussed through controlling the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) stage temperature to reduce thermal drift from 7.77 angstroms/hour down to 3.18 angstroms/hour. Then, a study on the effects oxygen plasma on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are revealed through a series of characterization tests. The thermal and electrical conductivity of the exposed CNTs were comparable to unexposed CNTs, and a demonstration of the exposed hydrophilic CNTs becoming more hydrophobic overtime is discussed. Finally, a synthesis method to fabricate monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is proposed using a combination of nanosphere lithography (NSL) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. The progress made in this thesis is a steppingstone of many towards post-silicon devices.
