Verification and validation of microgrid control architectures on a controller hardware in the loop testbed
Abstract
dc:descriptionWith the prevalence of integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaics (PVs), energy storage (ES) units etc., deployment of microgrids is seen as an effective way to manage, operate, and control such resources. Recent advances in the microgrid control technology present us with a gamut of ways to carry out the control functions using either a centralized, decentralized, or a distributed decision-making approach. These different decision-making approaches help build either a centralized, decentralized or a distributed microgrid control architecture. In this document, we provide a pathway towards verification and validation of such microgrid control architectures on a controller hardware-in-the-loop (C-HIL) testbed. The document starts out with a description of the various different control functions needed during microgrid grid-connected and grid-islanded mode of operations. The document then describes in detail the Illinois C-HIL testbed that was built as part of the microgrid control architecture verification and validation efforts. The document also describes the centralized and the distributed implementation of each individual microgrid control function before presenting the important problem of integrating the various different microgrid control functions using both a centralized and a distributed control architecture. To this end, we propose a systematic approach towards building a centralized as well as a distributed scheduler that allows us to integrate and operate the different microgrid control functions under the two aforementioned architectures ensuring smooth operations. Finally, the document provides results obtained from the C-HIL testing of some of the microgrid control functions, the centralized scheduler, and the distributed scheduler. These results provide some insights into the microgrid's performance under the centralized and distributed decision-making approaches.
