Abstract
dc:descriptionThe coupling of light and acoustic waves, known as Brillouin scattering, has been studied and applied for many applications in the past 100 years. Notable applications such as narrow linewidth lasers, optical isolators, optical sensors, and optical amplifiers have been demonstrated. We are interested in demonstrating Brillouin scattering capability to detect the Coriolis effect for gyroscope applications. While light is not fundamentally sensitive to the Coriolis effect, the Brillouin scattering phenomenon can enable this sensitivity as it couples acoustic waves to light. This thesis explores this new application by calculating its expected performance value, demonstrating some preliminary results, and showing experimental designs for the path forward.
