A bio-inspired underwater multi-spectral and polarization imaging system
Abstract
dc:descriptionResearchers have shown that the mantis shrimp can sense 16 different spectral channels and four linear polarization orientations in their natural habitat. The mantis shrimp’s tiny yet complicated compound eyes have inspired our lab to develop various new imaging devices and allowed us to explore many new applications. However, we have never brought our state-of-the-art imaging systems back to the mantis shrimp’s natural habitat. Our previous underwater imaging systems are old and bulky, and they cannot satisfy our ever-changing underwater scientific research needs. This thesis presents the design and development of a new, compact underwater imaging system. Together with my labmates, we developed a new underwater housing and custom circuit boards. We put together an underwater polarization imaging device for underwater geolocalization application. We fabricated a new camera system for our X3 vertical stacked imaging sensors. We also rewrote a brand-new camera control and data collection software in Python. This unique underwater imaging system has proven itself in our recent field trip in Hawaii. It opens up many more possibilities for us to explore the vast underwater world with our unique imaging devices.
