System integration and validation of simulated intracardiac echocardiography in soft active heart simulator
Abstract
dc:descriptionSoft Active Transseptal Puncture Simulator (SATPS) is a medical training simulator developed for training electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists in atrial fibrillation ablation and valve repair. An important technique in these interventions is Transseptal Puncture (TP), where a catheter assembly accesses the left atrium of the heart from the right atrium by puncturing the septum separating the two atria in an area known as fossa ovalis (FO). Surgeons use intracardiac electrocardiography (ICE) to locate the catheter inside the atrium. The thesis deals with simulating the ICE in the SATPS, thereby assimilating the function of the ultrasound view during the training process. The simulated ICE environment receives 3D coordinate data of the tenting peak of the catheter on the FO and provides live visualization of the tenting movement using the coordinate data. The Cartesian coordinate data are obtained from the pixel coordinate and depth data transmitted through the depth camera placed on the simulator, and are processed using algorithms developed using the computer vision techniques from the open source computer vision library (OpenCV) [1]. The accuracy of the processed coordinate data was tested through a validation test, and the face validity of the realism of the simulated ICE environment was established through evaluation by experienced clinicians. Following up on the experts’ comments on the need for pre-tenting catheter imaging, preliminary work needed for the implementation of the catheter imaging in the simulated ICE was done.
