An overview of teaching English in South Korea

There is a major demand for the English language within South Korea. In 2019 it was reported by Statista (2020) that roughly 5.4 billion USDs were spent on English language education in South Korea. With this high demand for English learning in South Korea, many Native English speakers have found employment teaching English in South Korea. There are upwards of 20,000 Native English speakers teaching in South Korea every year (Bentley 2020). To help give an overall understanding of the experience of teaching in Korea, more than 100 Native English-speaking teachers were surveyed about their experience in South Korea. In addition, Koreans who co-taught with native English speakers were surveyed to provide a fuller perspective of this experience. Through the results of the surveys, there were commonalities found among the participants giving understanding to the value of TESOL certificates, cross-cultural communication breakdowns, and identifying differences in educational philosophy. The last section concludes with a guide to help prospective teachers going to South Korea to teach.
