Multi-pixel charge sharing energy reconstruction (MCSER) algorithm with application in small-pixel semiconductor detectors

dc:descriptionSmall-pixel CdTe/CZT semiconductor detectors have shown great potential in medical imaging. However, most of current CZT detectors used in medical imaging applications still suffer serious performance degradation partially due to incomplete charge-collection. In this paper, we discuss a multi-pixel charge sharing energy reconstruction (MCSER) algorithm that could be used to enhance the spectral performance of the small-pixel CdTe/CZT semiconductor detectors. This algorithm, by exploiting the patterns of charge sharing between adjacent pixels, allows for an effective recovery of the signal deficit associated with charge-sharing events. In this study, the improvement in both energy resolution and detector sensitivity are demonstrated experimentally by comparing MCSER algorithm and traditional charge-sharing discrimination (CSD) algorithm and charge sharing addition (CSA) algorithms. The results indicate that MCSER algorithm can provides around twice the detector sensitivity comparing with CSD algorithm and enhance energy resolution by around 10 keV in comparison with CSA algorithm. Finally, single-pin-hole projection experiments is presented as a protocol to further evaluate the ultra-high energy resolution and detection sensitivity enhancement with the MCSER algorithm with medical imaging applications.
