Reconfigurable RF front end: A mixer-first architecture and tunable filters

Two ways of achieving a reconfigurable RF receiver system, namely a mixer-first receiver system and an on-chip tunable bandpass filter, are reviewed and verified. For the mixer-first receiver, a pure passive mixer called distributedly modulated capacitor (DMC) is introduced and analyzed, then simulation in ADS is reported, the results of which prove the capability of DMC to achieve a mixer-first receiver system. In addition, a mixer-first receiver with conventional mixer and bandpass filter is designed on PCB and measured in lab. For the tunable bandpass filter, the concept of N-path filter is discussed and some simulation results are reported. Some possible improvements to N-path filter are investigated and simulated.
