Abstract

Selenium was J.J. Berzelius. discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist It was identified in a red deposit that had collected on the floor of a room in which sulfur, obtained as an industrial waste product from a copper mine, had been used; its similarity to tellurium had caused it to have been mistaken for that element. Since the name tellurium had been coined from talus, the Latin word for "earth," Berzelius named his discovery after the Greek word for "moon," selene.
