The Synthesis and Polymerization of N-Vinylacrylamide.

The subject of this thesis is the synthesis of N-vinylacrylamide and, eventually, the cyclopolymerization of this monomer which, upon hydrolysis, should yield the alternating copolymer, poly(acrylic acid-co-vinylamine). N-vinylacrylamide was prepared by condensing two moles of acrylamide with one mole of acetaldehyde to give the intermediate, N,N’-ethylidenebisacrylamide, which was pyrolyzed at approximately 140°C, 20 mm. The N-vinylacrylamide was identified by NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The spin decoupling technique was used to analyze the N-vinylacrylamide proton pattern which was complicated by isomerism. The attempted cyclopolymerization of this monomer with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator afforded an insoluble polymer, possibly because of the difference in reactivity of the two vinyl groups.
