The Value of Translanguaging Within Multilingual Learning Environments: The Icelandic Perspective. The Advantage of Bilingualism and Translanguaging Within the Icelandic School System

This thesis explores the potential of translanguaging as a pedagogical approach in Iceland's increasingly diverse educational environment. With over 100 languages now spoken in primary school classrooms nationwide, the need for adapted teaching strategies that effectively support multilingual learners is becoming more apparent. This thesis explores the concept of translanguaging, the theory behind it, and the way it can be applied in the Icelandic educational system. It furthermore discusses the challenges presented by linguistic diversity in Icelandic schools and highlights policies and guides for schools’ individual curriculums. The thesis will evaluate the relevance of translanguaging regarding the values of Iceland's national curriculum and the rights of children in Iceland and Europe. It will also touch on the benefits of translanguaging for literacy, a relevant concern in Icelandic schools. The research draws on teaching strategies and translanguaging discussions to illustrate how translanguaging can be valuable and productive for educators in Iceland to encourage the learning of students' mother tongues, have inclusive classrooms, and cultivate positive attitudes within students towards diverse cultural identities. Finally, the relevance and potential benefits of integrating translanguaging approaches into Iceland's primary school system are examined, particularly considering the country's diverse linguistic changes and how teachers’ training can be modified to successfully implement translanguaging in education.
