Hefnigjarna sagan um fótatakið sem flúði: A Translation of "The Vindictive Story of the Footsteps That Ran"

This BA thesis involves a translation of the short story “The Vindictive Story of the Footsteps that Ran” by Dorothy Leigh Sayers, as well as an analytical essay on the project. Sayers wrote several novels and short stories in the 1920s and 1930s which featured one of her best-known characters, Lord Peter Wimsey. This thesis introduces the author and her works as well as some Icelandic translations of her stories. Additionally, the German theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher and his contribution to translation theories are presented and discussed. The translator adheres to Schleiermacher’s theory published in 1816, in which he argues that the reader should always be led towards the author and that is to be accomplished with the assistance of a translator. Although the author-to-reader method exists, Schleiermacher maintains that it is not acceptable. By adhering to Schleiermacher’s method, consistency is maintained throughout the target text. Furthermore, the challenges which came to light during the translation process are discussed as well as consequent solutions and decisions which were reached by studying Schleiermacher’s theories. However, on a few occasions it was necessary to depart from his arguments. Therefore, additions and omissions are opted for despite Schleiermacher’s disapproval. Finally, the Icelandic translation of the short story is included.
