Design and creation of a personal wellness day planner

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The exercise and fitness movement in the United States is undergoing a period of rapid change. Beginning primarily from the competitive philosophy of athletics, with its focus on appearance, competition, and performance, this movement is shifting towards a wellness philosophy. The movement is no longer just exercise to extremes, but is becoming a comprehensive cultural view, a style of daily living which emphasizes balance according to White ( 1993). This holistic approach is a continuum and not a destination. Every day provides a new chance for people to responsibly exercise their free choice of lifestyles. The purpose of this project was to create a personal wellness day planner for use by individuals to record their wellness activities. By recording and planning wellness activities, a person may engage more often in them than a person who does not plan. While a person may not necessarily pick up and read a book about health, this planner can deliver preventive health information where other books may fail because it can be used for personal activity planning. The personal wellness day planner offers weekly wellness lessons. The lessons include general scientific information about preventing disease through exercise, nutrition, stress management, and personal care. The lessons were chosen from scientific guidelines about exercise, nutrition, and stress management. Lessons include safety, physiology, how to prevent boredom, how to reduce or prevent overuse injuries, and many other tips which will improve a wellness program. The personal wellness day planner provides an environmental stimulus to engage in wellness activities, while also educating. The wellness philosophy will be elucidated, and each week the planner will provide a paragraph of scientifically validated health information taken from the leading sources from each field.
