Preference and affiliation refines the neurotranscriptome pathway for mate preference

Abstract

Mate choice decisions and behavior contribute to long-term evolutionary outcomes. Understanding the genetic architecture encapsulating mate choice is an important metric in identifying the drivers and variability in those decisions. To address this question, female sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) in 2 groups (exposed to two male models or two female models) underwent a social behavioral assay (30 minutes in total) in which two social-choice behaviors (preference and social affiliation) were measured. To capture the genes underlying these decisions, the brains of each female were sequenced (Illumina RNA-seq) directly following the behavioral assay.
