Describing the Roadway and Driver Characteristics of Fatality Motor Vehicle Crashes in Travis County Texas in 2008

The purpose of this study is to describe roadway design, intersection design, and driver characteristics of motor vehicle fatality crashes in Travis County Texas in 2008. By analyzing existing data of these characteristics from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) database, the results from Travis County will be compared to Texas’ ten most populated counties, the State of Texas, and the United States. Evaluation of these factors suggest strategies to minimize the number of motor-vehicle fatality crashes that occur each year in Travis County. The results from this study suggest areas of high concern for motor vehicle fatality crashes in Travis County include roadways with one to three travel lanes, drivers between the ages of 12 thru 45 years of age, and drivers with blood alcohol concentrations of 0.08 g/dL or more.
