Water Management in the High Plains: A Description of Farmers Beliefs and Need for Structured Conservation Education

The purpose of this research is to describe what Parmer County farmers believe their role is in water management and water conservation. The research also describes what Parmer County farmers believe about the structured dissemination of conservation information they receive. To accomplish this task, a self-administered questionnaire using a purposive sample was distributed at local businesses that Parmer County farmers and landowners are known to frequent. The survey was created from the descriptive categories identified in the conceptual framework with each question being linked to a specific category through the use of an operationalization table. There were 37 surveys completed by Parmer County farmers. The results revealed that the farmers fully believe in local water management and that they are using the best farming practices to conserve water. The results indicated a problem in the education of the farmers because the respondents believe strongly that they are getting confusing information about water conservation practices.
