Behavioral Therapies in Cardiac Rehabilitation [poster]

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Cardiac rehabilitation is a Class I recommendation for individuals with cardiac disease and has been shown to improve mortality and morbidity in this population. Patients with known cardiac disease experience significant levels of psychological distress, such as depression, anxiety, and high levels of stress. This psychological distress can negatively impact participation in cardiac rehabilitation, therefore affecting disease severity. Current knowledge supports the efficacy of behavioral therapies in lifestyle changes and their lasting outcomes. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted to summarize current evidence on the efficacy of behavioral therapies within cardiac rehabilitation programs. A search was conducted using CINAHL, Cochrane Library, JBI database, PubMed, and MEDLINE for randomized controlled trials on behavioral therapies in cardiac rehabilitation. Eight studies were included in the review. All behavioral therapies were found to be effective interventions for managing psychological distress in individuals diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and attending cardiac rehabilitation. The results suggest that behavioral interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, metacognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, can enhance the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation programs. This systematic review provides evidence that behavioral therapies integrated into cardiac rehabilitation may have beneficial outcomes in addressing psychological concerns that typically occur in patients after cardiac disease diagnosis. More research on behavioral therapy implementation in cardiac rehabilitation is needed to provide psychological interventions that fulfill the needs of this patient population.
