The Effects of Treating Dauer C. Elegans with Natural Anthelmintics and Ivermectin

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to verify the effectiveness of anthelmintics during arrested development. Anthelmintics are any drug that aims to treat parasitic infections without harming the victim. The experiment performed focused on two strains of Caenorhabditis elegans, a wild and mutant strain. They were split into a dauer and non-dauer group and further divided into different samples. Dauer and hypobiosis are both stages of arrested development that is triggered by stressful circumstances. The worms will fall into a an almost dead state where they do not eat, grow, or move. Alliin, Wormwood extract, and Ivermectin were used to treat the worms. A motility assay was conducted before, during, and after the treatments. As a result, the wormwood extract was effective at killing both wild and odr-3 mutant strains in either dauer or non-dauer worms. The wormwood extract appeared to be the most effective because there were no survivors (p<0.05). Ivermectin and alliin proved were best at reducing the worm counts during non-dauer conditions for both strains of C.elegans. This contradicts some of the studies which treated Haemonchus contortus with other wormwood extracts. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that treating nematodes during dauer may not be an effective treatment strategy.
