Health and the Cities: The Responses of Educational Leaders to Health Education Policy

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study examines the health education policies across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as the responses of educational leaders in three school districts—Chicago Public Schools, Oakland Unified School District, and the School District of Philadelphia, to investigate the impact of these policies on students' health risk behaviors and school leaders’ practices. Given the increasing recognition of schools as critical sites for health promotion, this research explores how principals implement and engage with health education policies and the challenges they face in doing so. The study analyzes variations in policy implementation and effectiveness using survey data from students and school administrators. Key findings indicate inconsistencies in policy adoption, with resource limitations and administrative support playing pivotal roles in successful implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for enhancing health education strategies, including increased funding, targeted professional development, and stronger policy enforcement mechanisms to support the implementation of school-based comprehensive health education.
