Beyond Racial Categorizing: The Influence of the Spanish Bodegón on Casta Painting
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
I discuss the influence that the seventeenth-century Sevillian tradition of the bodegón, still-lifes that include kitchens, taverns, food and people, had on the development of genre-syle casta painting in New Spain. In setting apart the two types of casta painting, the register type and the genre type, I offer answers to the questions "what function did the use of he bodegón serve within casta painting and what was the purpose of the genre-style paintings beyond racial categorizing.
