An Analysis of Max Reger's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello

<p>Max Reger's Suites for Solo Cello, Op. 131c were written in 1914 just two years before his death and published in early 1915. They borrow significantly from the works of earlier eras and are styled after Johann Sebastian Bach's unaccompanied works for cello. The harmonic language of the suites, however, is consistent with the era in which Reger lived. The combination of historicist influences and early twentieth-century modernist influences in Reger's work has been misunderstood for much of the century that has passed since their publication. In the last twenty years, there has been increased interest in performance and recording of the suites. This paper includes an analysis of each of the three suites and looks at the influences of the compositional styles of the past as well as those of Reger's time on these works.</p>
