They borrow significantly from the works of earlier eras and are styled after Johann Sebastian Bach's unaccompanied works for cello. The harmonic language of the suites, however, is consistent with the era in which Reger lived. The combination of historicist influences and early twentieth-century modernist influences in Reger's work has been misunderstood for much of the century that has passed since their publication. In the last twenty years, there has been increased interest in performance and recording of the suites.
