FROM ‘WE REASONERS’ TO ‘WE SUFFERERS’: COMMUNITY AND LOYALTY FROM ROYCE, THROUGH SELLARS, TO RORTY
Abstract
dc:description.abstractJosiah Royce, Wilfrid Sellars, and Richard Rorty form a loose intellectual tradition in their various presentations of moral community. Their influence on one another has been noted but not yet fully explored. This dissertation remedies that lack. It shows the dependence in addressing this topic of Royce on Sellars and Sellars on Rorty. It then argues that Rorty’s position would have benefited from engaging more fully with Royce’s thought. It concludes by showing some specific ways in which Roycean insights would augment the Rortian account of community.
