Childcare Needs of Ethiopian Families

<p>This study investigates the childcare experiences of Ethiopian families in a select South Dakota City. A total of 17 parents from ten families were interviewed using an interview guide. The childcare experiences of families while they were in Ethiopia and their experience in America were discussed. Findings indicate that the childcare experiences of parents who came from Ethiopia with their children were more challenging than families who lived here before having children. Five themes about childcare emerged: the use of “mothers” as childcare providers, informal support system, working atypical hours, support from employers, and disparities in social, professional and economic status. Finally, participants who have met their childcare needs were found to be interested in their personal and professional development.</p>
