Determination, Treatment, and Prevention of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia in a Diabetes Camp Setting
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
An exploratory study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of an untested 10- and 24-hour blood glucose protocol in the determination, treatment, and prevention of nocturnal hypoglycemia in a camp setting. Subjects were 57 campers at a week long summer diabetes camp. Age of the subjects ranged from 8 to 15 years with a mean age of 11.7 years. The conceptual framework reflected the review of literature and the blood glucose protocol. The research tool contained data related to the medical history, home blood glucose levels, camp blood glucose levels, supplemental and nocturnal nutrition, and exercise level.
Results indicated that the 10-hour blood glucose protocol eliminated subjects from the 24-hour blood glucose protocol. The results also indicated that the 10- hour blood glucose protocol is an effective tool for the camp health care team to use when determining, treating, and preventing nocturnal hypoglycemia.
