A Comparative Study of Selected Variables in Women Who Gave Birth to a Child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome on a Plains Indian Reservation Between 1981 and 1992
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
This study is a retrospective chart review. The medical records at an Indian Health Service hospital located on a plains Indian reservation in the United States were examined over a fourteen year period to determine the differences among selected variables in case and control mothers. Case mothers consisted of women who had given birth to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The control mothers consisted of woman who had not given birth to a child with FAS on the same reservation. The hypotheses of this thesis were that mothers of children diagnosed with FAS have a higher incidence of cigarette smoking, poor nutritional status, history of sexually transmitted disease (STD) exposure, and be significantly older than the control group. Statistical differences were found in the variables of age and nutritional status supporting the hypotheses in these areas.
