The medical records at an Indian Health Service hospital located on a plains Indian reservation in the United States were examined over a fourteen year period to determine the differences among selected variables in case and control mothers. Case mothers consisted of women who had given birth to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The control mothers consisted of woman who had not given birth to a child with FAS on the same reservation. The hypotheses of this thesis were that mothers of children diagnosed with FAS have a higher incidence of cigarette smoking, poor nutritional status, history of sexually transmitted disease (STD) exposure, and be significantly older than the control group.
