The Relationship of Social Support, Help-seeking Behaviors, and Hardiness to Academic Performance in RN Upward Mobility Students
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>This descriptive correlational study was designed to determine the relationship between demographic characteristics, social support, hardiness, help-seeking behavior, and academic performance of RN Upward Mobility student. The setting for the study was a large, multi-campus nursing program within a Midwestern comprehensive land grant university. A self-selected convenience sample of RN Upward Mobility Nursing students participated by filling out a paper and pencil survey. The instrument was comprised of demographic data, two questions on help-seeking behavior, two questions on academic performance, the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire and the Personal Views Survey.<br> No significant relationship was found between grade point average and hardiness, social-support, or help-seeking behaviors. There were statistically significant correlations generated from the demographic data that will be useful in planning interventions to facilitate the transition of the returning RN Upward Mobility student. Nursing educators can continue to play a leading role in risk assessment, identification, and interventions of the RN Upward Mobility student.</p>
