Differences in Knowledge Levels About Pain Management Among Advanced Practice Nurses and Non-advanced Practice Registered Nurses

This study was undertaken to examine differences in knowledge level about pharmacologic pain management of non-advanced practice registered nurses and advanced practice nurses. This study is significant because no studies in the literature reviewed have compared the pharmacological pain management knowledge of advanced practice nurses with non-advanced practice registered nurses. Advanced practice nurses are role models with increased knowledge and skills and are in a position to influence professional nursing practice (Calkin, 1984) . It is assumed that advanced practice nurses have increased knowledge related to pain management, but the differences in knowledge between the advanced practice nurses and non-advanced practice nurses has not been empirically documented. Until research about knowledge of the two types of nurses is undertaken, differentiation between the advanced practice nurse and non-advanced practice registered nurse cannot be clearly understood.
